A lonely middle-aged woman lives her monotonous life. Every morning, she goes to her job as a supermarket cashier, and every day after work she goes straight home to look after her ailing mother and the rest of the family. Nobody, however, seems to care. Then, the mysterious murder of her boss sets off a chain of events at the end of which she can be free and find her own worth. How to describe her journey? Perhaps best as a sexual odyssey, an exploratory expedition to places where an important role is played by carnality, desire, and its gratification. Tropicana is a subtly enigmatic reflection on conservatism, prudery, and the false ideal of physical beauty. angol (KVIFF 2024) At first glance, Tropicana has a promising premise (at least according to the promising blurb), but the execution is incredibly tedious and drawn out. This daring Israeli film has more than one scene that might shock you, and that’s pretty much it. The physical scenes are for effect and do nothing to enhance the smoky atmosphere of a film devoid of (non-diegetic) music for almost the entire running time. I can see what they were going for, but it could have been more entertaining. ()
