Pandorum (2009)

angol A good film with a great start, which unfortunately doesn't manage to maintain its atmosphere. But it doesn't matter too much - instead of a sci-fi/psycho/horror movie, after half an hour Pandorum becomes a slasher flick in space with solid scares and a decently scary atmosphere. Everybody is still wondering what happened on the ship, and although I suspected one of the final twists, the point really surprised me and the finale was impressive. Go ahead and put on Pandorum like I do at 10 o'clock at night, put on your headphones, turn off the lights and I guarantee you'll have a hell of a time falling asleep in bed.

Hozzátok el nekem Alfredo Garcia fejét! (1974)

angol This Peckinpah film has only one minus - it drags strangely slowly, which may put some people off. But those who endure will get a fair portion of a bloody-raw story in which you won't find a positive character, and which takes place in a world where the sun burns all the time and blood flows almost as strongly as tequila. I liked how the film gradually picked up momentum - Bloody Sam did a first class job in this regard again. But what absolutely blew me away was the opening five to ten minutes. You think you're watching a western before the guys in modern-looking clothes appear on the scene (inconspicuously) and before the cars pull out of the gate and a jet starts roaring on the runway at the airport. Great. Add to that the chilling "rape" scene, the beautifully romantic shower, the whole section in the cemetery, and the final slow-motion shootout (without a machine gun, but with submachine guns), and that makes get four pure stars. And after another viewing, perhaps the impression I wrote about at the beginning will disappear. Let's see.__P.S. I bet now I know where Frank Miller got the idea of "a man driving in a car and talking to someone's severed head", which he used in Sin City.__P.P.S. I'm sure the Coens have been watching Alfred Garcia - I couldn't help comparing this film to No Country for Old Men.

A Bit of Fry and Laurie (1987) (sorozat)

angol The Pythons couldn't have asked for a crazier and more worthy successor. I've only seen the first two seasons, but that doesn't stop me from giving it five stars. We can only hope that one day we will see these mini-geniuses in the Czech Republic as well.

Nincs Helsing - Rémes film (2009)

angol It's not total crap, but it’s close. About 95% of Stan Helsing amounts to an incredibly lame film that would love to poke fun at horror movies starring the most famous killers (Freddy, Mike, Pinhead, Leatherface, etc.,). But it’s not very good at it. Leslie Nielsen is responsible for the funniest moments, but he's not exactly full of jokes either (more like we are glad to see him), then there are a few other moments like Freddy's multi-functional gloves, karaoke, and the final scene. Stan Helsing is better than Scary Movie (the first two), but it's not up to the level of Superhero Movie (staying with recent parodies).

Zseni az apám (2008)

angol A relaxing and somehow also nice and warm film that focuses on fixing a bitter, grumpy guy, but it has a lot of pluses that shouldn't make it fit in. First, there's Dennis Quaid, whose Professor Wetherhold is one of his best roles ever, then the trio of Thomas Haden Church, Ellen Page and Sarah Jessica Parker. Smart People is a sensitive film full of subtle humor that quickly won me over. It relies mainly on likeable protagonists, which it succeeds in doing. With all this, I give it four of the purest stars possible.

Negyedik típusú találkozások (2009)

angol It's like Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. Die-hard naysayers will find this film laughable, and people who believe in UFOs or (in my case) are at least capable of thinking about them (because they're just not selfish enough to think the universe is dead except for us) will like it. As for The Fourth Kind, my only reservations are about the presence of the director himself in it - in my opinion, Dr. Tyler could have been interviewed by anyone else, but this Olatunde guy was obviously too eager to see himself on screen - and one scene from the final quarter of an hour (MAYBE SPOILER: It really wasn't necessary to show Milla on the deck of the ship and the alien "medical" instruments rotating around her). Otherwise, everything was OK. I liked the film, the scenes (hypnosis, the shooting, the final monologue of the real Tyler) gave me chills, the actors (Jovovich, Koteas, Patton) did a good job. Praise for the minimalistic but atmospheric music. And for the fact that we didn't see a single E.T.

Charlie Wilson háborúja (2007)

angol This is exactly the kind of movie I love. Clever dramatic-satirical comedies about things that look unbelievable but really happened. Charlie Wilson's War offers a script full of extra dry humor, a charming trio of main characters (you couldn't pick better performers), great scenes such as the first meeting between Wilson and "Gus", a bathroom conversation, an audience with the Pakistani president, a visit to a refugee camp and a helicopter shoot-down... I give the film four and a half stars, which I'm rounding up because I just want to. Oh, and also for the shattered window in the office and for the final quote.__P.S. There are only two documentaries on the DVD, but one of them (Who is Charlie Wilson?) is surprisingly interesting.

Marie Antoinette (2006)

angol Excellent! Marie Antoinette is such a sweet, pink Amadeus, you could say. The film got me mainly with its playfulness, Kirsten Dunst, the sensational soundtrack, thanks to which we hear classic songs and rock songs, hundreds of beautiful costumes and a number of excellent actors in supporting roles (Danny Huston and Steve Coogan deserve to be highlighted). A big surprise!

A vad bolygó (1973)

angol In the words of Varel Frištenský: "It was nice, but I had to see it twice..." Fantastic Planet is strange. I tried to watch it three times, but each time I fell asleep after about a quarter of an hour. Not today. I endured the film, but I have to say... It's nothing special. I liked the main idea of the tame and wild people and when the "peaceful" creatures become completely different and not afraid of violence. But that was (apart from the dubbing) about it. The animation seems dated to me (and yet this cannot be said of films much older than Fantastic Planet), the story and dialogue delivery are terribly dry, without emotion, and the final quarter of an hour is strangely empty, although it was probably meant to be dramatic. It's worth about two and a half stars, but I'm rounding up - purely out of respect for Czech filmmakers who were not afraid to be original and try to make "something different" years ago.

Az admirális (2008)

angol Average as can be, and yet at the beginning it looked much more promising. The Admiral needs either a shorter runtime or more interesting characters and a richer plot - as it is, it is boring and especially the second hour of the film is empty to the point of shame. I have to praise some really well shot scenes (the opening voyage between the mines, the shelling of trenches on land - basically everything that takes place on board the ships), the music and the fact that the main characters were at least likeable when there was no "chemistry" between them.__P.S. I no longer regret that I missed out on this "Russian Pearl Harbor" at the Film Club.
