Nápoly, az 1980-as évek eleje. Aldo (Luigi Lo Cascio) és felesége, Vanda (Alba Rohrwacher) egykor boldog kapcsolata egy este megszakad, amikor Aldo egyszercsak spontán bevallja, hogy hűtlen volt. Vanda ugyanolyan sértetten és tanácstalanul próbálja elrejteni fájdalmát két iskoláskorú gyerekük elől, nehogy rájöjjenek, hogy szűk lakásuk nem a bizalom és a szeretet otthona többé. 30 évvel később Aldo (Silvio Orlandi) és Vanda (Laura Morante) még mindig együtt vannak, de kapcsolataikat egymással és felnőtt gyermekeikkel, Annával (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) és Sandróval (Adriano Giannini) továbbra is az évekkel ezelőtt történtek határozzák meg. At first, the dad seemed like someone you'd want to punch, and I thought, "Oh great, is this going to be some feminist statement about how terrible men are?" But then the mom started acting out of line too, and I found myself wondering where it was all headed. About halfway through, I thought maybe it deserved three stars—after all, for a family drama, it wasn't as over-the-top and loud as you'd expect from an Italian film. But then things took a turn, and the emotions just stopped making sense.
