A rendező előző filmje, a Szerelemre hangolva két házasember, Mr. Chow és Mrs. Chan keserédes, soha be nem teljesedő szerelmi románcát mesélte el. A történet folytatásában a 2046. számú hotelszobában Mr. Chow könyvet ír egy vonatról, amely a jövőbe, 2046-ba repíti utasait, ahol azok állítólag megtalálják elveszett emlékeiket. Hogy az utazás mennyire sikeres, senki nem tudja, mert még egyetlen ember sem tért vissza. Most azonban valaki visszatér. Ott járt 2046-ban, és úgy döntött, visszajön, hogy változtasson a múltján.
