angol After the tragicomic King Kong sequel, John Guillermin delivered a western swan song. The plot about a heartless gang of miscreants and an experienced tracker forced to take down the rifle hanging over the fireplace might not impress with its originality, but there are three elements that elevate this earnest, unembellished filmmaking. The evolving relationship between Kris Kristofferson's pragmatic character and his educated son, where shadows from the past gradually emerge, and the offspring learns, in a kind of atavistic way, that if you draw, you must shoot. Then there’s the villain. The treacherous, religiously ranting outlaw leader played by Scott Wilson, effectively representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as meeting him usually leaves you with little time left. And last but not least, the unusual electronic arrangement by Sylvester Levay for the genre, which powerfully enhances the atmosphere. It’s one of those films where the music has a special power to shift everything to another level. ()
