A tizenkilencedik század végén H. G. Wells író vacsorapartit rendez angliai otthonában. Az eseményt a rendőrség érkezése szakítja félbe, akik Hasfelmetsző Jacket, a hírhedt sorozatgyilkost keresik. A félelmetes gyilkosnak az író időgépével sikerül elmenekülnie az üldözői elől. Miután a gép visszatér, Wells úgy dönt, hogy Hasfelmetsző Jack nyomába ered, és elkapja, mielőtt bármilyen gonoszságot elkövetne. A nyomok a hetvenes évek Amerikájába, San Franciscóba vezetnek. H. G. Wells pursues Jack the Ripper through time and space. Seems like a great theme, and the cast... But however good it looks on paper, in practice it is terribly dull. It falls into trivial romantic cooing that isn’t worth wasting a good theme on, because that could happen without any time travel, Wells or the Ripper; but here all of that is somehow sidelined.

Malcolm McDowell is a great actor, and he shows beautifully in this film that he can play likable characters that have depth. There's still something peculiar about him, which is inherent to the plot. He certainly has charm, like the entire film, which is a thriller, but so pleasantly lightened and romantic that it works on all levels - the dramatic, bloody, comedic, and romantic alike.
