Sorozatgyilkos tartja rettegésben New York lakóit. Tizenegy hónapon át tizenegyszer ölt és most is arra készül. Január következik, az új év kezdete. Vajon ki lesz a következő áldozat? A városszerte növekvő félelem és feszültség arra kényszeríti a polgármestert, hogy bevonja a nyomozásba egyik elbocsátott emberét Nick Starkey-t. Nick minden, csak nem hagyományos zsaru. Ahogy egyik kollégája jellemzi: "nem rendőr, hanem rendbontó". Nick valóban sajátságos módszerekkel dolgozik. Eszköztárában fontos szerep jut a vörösbornak, a tűzoltófecskendőnek, a computernek, a humornak és a nőknek. Nevezetesen a fivére feleségének és a pogármester bájos lányának. De bármennyire nem szívlelik is a "kockafejűek" Nick Starkey-t, azt mindannyian kénytelenek elismerni, hogy ezt a rejtélyes ügyet csakis ő képes megoldani. Addig pedig mindenki gyanús, aki él. For half the film, they keep Kline’s detective’s special abilities under wraps (we only know he can get a woman to bed on the first date), and then it’s finally revealed that he’s a New York Monk who approaches problems through prime numbers, the starry sky, and a firefighter’s nature (while everyone is running outside, he goes inside). Genre-wise and in terms of character, it’s oddly unmoored and definitely not a pure comedy. The way the investigation is conducted is more so amusing, and the capture of the culprit borders on farce. However, as one-time entertainment with a strong cast, it serves its purpose well. Among the characters, Aiello stands out as the typically loudmouthed police chief, who defied two clichés: he wasn't black, and despite his frequent state of resignation, he wasn’t actually loudmouthed. P.S.: What would the 80s be without music in the closing credits that unmistakably screams the 80s?
