Los Angeles, 2001 tavaszán. A nagy multik felhőkarcoló irodáinak árnyékában található a Millió Dolláros Hotel, mely a társadalom perifériáján élő, az „amerikai álmon” kívül rekedt különcök gyűjtőhelye. Egy nap a hotel váratlanul a hírek és a közérdeklődés középpontjába kerül: Izzy, a narkós művész rejtélyes körülmények között lezuhan az intézmény tetejéről. Vajon baleset volt, vagy öngyilkosság, esetleg valaki egyszerűen lelökte onnan? A városnak ebben a negyedében normális körülmények között senkit sem érdekel egy ilyen eset, Izzy halála azonban rövid úton a botránysajtó címlapjára kerül. Barátai és szállószomszédai legnagyobbb meglepetésére ugyanis kiderül, hogy Izzy egy multimilliomos sajtómágnás fia volt. Az ügy felderítésével megbízott kérlelhetetlen FBI nyomozó, Skinner szemében a hotel minden egyes lakója potenciális gyanúsított. Nyomozásának előrehaladtával egyre jobban összemosódik álom és valóság, bűnös és áldozat. A sztoikus Skinner a végén már maga se tudja ki őrült, és ki normális. (Kinowelt)

Psychedelic nonsense. Boring, unintentionally ridiculous in places. And I still think U2 is the best rock-pop band of all time.

The three pretentious stars are rather a satisfied evaluation. Wenders creates an atmosphere through captivating monologues and great camera work, while Gibson and Davies give their characters an incredible liveliness. However, the total disappointment for the viewer is the screenplay. Instead of a psychologically tuned game or at least a genre-unidentified combination, it simply jumps from place to place and indulges in peculiar characters. And I consider it a great sin that the much-promoted U2 accompaniment is not used to its full potential, as it only faintly murmurs in the background, except for the opening and closing credits.

An excellent blend of the gloomy setting of the old hotel and its dejected inhabitants with great performances and a pleasant musical score. It all sounds very nice, but overall the film's plot simply failed to draw me in enough to stare at the screen with my mouth open. The potential was certainly great, but it wasn't quite tapped. Another criticism would be the longer running time. All in all, a film that stays slightly above average, thanks mainly to Jeremy Davies, Milla Jovovich and Gloria Stuart, but there are plenty of much deeper drama-thrillers that deserve a higher rating compared to it.
