It did bum me out that the series was so predictable, because clearly that’s won’t get by in today's competitive landscape, but Sienna Miller had me so completely wrapped around her finger that my criticisms of the script took a back seat. This was also partly due to the atmosphere, the beautiful English, the psychological aspect, and the suspense, which kept my hopes up that there would be at least a little something more at the end. I was hoping for another Defending Jacob, but there is no such pleasure and in the end Anatomy of a Scandal is actually "just" average. The best thing here, but paradoxically also a biggest issue, is the complete straightforwardness of the series, which is practically nonstop in the courtroom from the first minutes, setting in motion the gradual unraveling of the story and the dark past, the 6x40 running that is cut down to literally only the bare essentials to the plot, and thus it’s fast-paced. But at the same time, there is drastically little time to get to know the characters, emotionally connect or absorb information, and so you more or less sort of skim the series rather than fully experiencing it, squirming nervously in your seat. The acting is average, likewise the script, the characters are not that interesting and the finale is quite expected and unsurprising. I like the fairly clear-cut message the creators want to convey, as well as the story, which can be seen as setting up a mirror to the society of wealthy elitist individuals and their virtually unlimited freedom, but I still got a kind of "meh" feeling when it was over. In short, while I wasn't bored, the series left me pretty cold and emotionless... (2022.04.20)
