Set in Tokyo, the story follows college student Kanecki (voice of Natsuki Hanae) who is transformed into a half-ghoul after he is almost killed in an attack by a disguised ghoul he was on a date with. Shunned by his fellow humans, Kanecki is accepted by a group of ghouls who teach him about their culture and show him how to adapt to their ways, including his new need to consume human flesh to survive. Season 1 (2014) (S01)
At times the classically constructed journey of an outsider towards abilities, other times a story from life, at others still an action thriller, comedy, philosophy, and last but not least, a staggering amount of blood or openness. I am very glad that the fates of Kaneki and his friends and foes are unconventionally constructed and effective, and every time I thought I had their genre and intention figured out, another surprising twist came. Seldom is a cocktail of so many ingredients successfully mixed with a universal tasteful finale for everyone.

For some, this may be nothing more than melancholy, long looks into the distance, and a lot of pondering about the meaning of existence, but I felt a bit more certain than last time in this world of searching for anything positive in an unhappy life. An opaque battle of good and evil, where until the last moment it is not entirely clear which group I would like to support and cheer for. A genre-focused work enhanced by experience, which is not afraid to be controversial or unusual, yet without stepping out of the role of a supernatural action horror flick.
